Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about renting or listing storage on StoreNextDoor.
For Renters
Common questions about finding storage, booking a space, and what to expect when you store your items with a local host.
Safety depends on the space you choose and the agreement you reach with your host. StoreNextDoor encourages renters to verify security features before committing — ask about locks, CCTV, fencing and who else has access. Choose a space that matches the value and sensitivity of what you're storing. StoreNextDoor connects you with hosts but is not responsible for the condition or security of individual spaces.
StoreNextDoor doesn't provide platform insurance — we connect renters and hosts but don't cover damages. We recommend agreeing in writing with the host who's responsible for what before items move in, and photographing your items at move-in for your own records. For high-value items, check whether your home and contents insurance covers items stored away from your residence, or arrange separate cover. Storage carries inherent risks like weather, accidents and general wear, and these need to be addressed between renter and host.
Payment terms are arranged directly between renter and host. Common arrangements include monthly bank transfer, cash in advance, or fortnightly payments — whatever both parties agree on. StoreNextDoor recommends agreeing on payment method, amount and timing before moving any items in. Keep a written record of your payment agreement in case of any future questions.
Access arrangements are set by the host and agreed with the renter before the arrangement starts. Some hosts offer 24/7 access; others may prefer access during certain hours. StoreNextDoor recommends clarifying access frequency, timing and notice requirements with your host before signing any agreement. If flexible access is important to you, make that a condition when choosing a space.
Your agreement with the host should clearly state that the host will not access, move or tamper with your stored items without your consent. Choosing a lockable space that only you have keys to is the strongest protection. StoreNextDoor recommends renting spaces with clear security — padlocks, CCTV or coded access — and keeping your items in sealed, labelled boxes to protect your privacy and reduce ambiguity.
Search by suburb or postcode on the Listings page and filter by type and price to narrow it down. Read each listing carefully — check photos, dimensions, security features and access hours. Message the host with any specific questions before committing. The right host is one who answers questions clearly, has a space that matches what you need to store, and is happy to walk you through the arrangement before you move in.
For Hosts
Everything you need to know about listing your space, screening renters, and earning income from unused storage.
Ask questions first. Confirm what they're storing, how long for, how often they'll access the space, and whether any items are weather or temperature sensitive. Ask them to confirm nothing illegal or hazardous is involved. Keep a record of your conversation. StoreNextDoor acts as the connection platform — if anything doesn't feel right, you're under no obligation to proceed with any enquiry.
Sign up on StoreNextDoor, then follow the prompts to list your space. Add dimensions, photos, a description of the security and access arrangement, your price and availability. The more detail you include, the more confident renters will feel making an enquiry. High-quality, well-lit photos make a significant difference to enquiry rates.
Any space that someone would find useful for storage — garages, carports, sheds, attics, lockable cupboards, outdoor yards. StoreNextDoor is built around the idea that unused space has real value. If you have space and can make it accessible and reasonably secure, it's worth listing.
Yes — entirely. Your price is your decision. Consider the size, security, accessibility and how long you're offering the space when setting a rate. StoreNextDoor recommends checking what comparable spaces in your area are charging to make sure your listing is competitive. Overpriced listings tend to attract fewer enquiries, while reasonably priced listings fill quickly.
Payments & safety
How payment, agreements and disputes work on StoreNextDoor.
Cancellation terms should be agreed before any arrangement begins. StoreNextDoor recommends both parties include a reasonable notice period — typically two to four weeks — in their written agreement. This protects both sides if circumstances change unexpectedly. If cancellation terms aren't agreed upfront and a dispute arises, both parties will need to resolve it between themselves.
At this stage, StoreNextDoor does not process payments between renters and hosts. Payment is arranged directly between both parties in whatever form they agree — bank transfer, cash or another method. We recommend agreeing on payment terms in writing before any storage begins, and keeping a record of each payment made or received.
